MONUMENT AT SHILOH

COMMEMORATING
THE UNITED DUGHTERS
OF THE CONFEDERACY

By Mrs. Anna Lockhart Davis
Memphis Tennessee

They stand erect and motionless

Bound together by unseen hand.

They stand for justice, graciousness

Peace and liberty in our land.

No tools in human hands alone

Could chisel love and tenderness

From cold white alabastrine stone.

Yet this, these figures do express:

Strength from a woman’s small white hands,

Beauty from her long silken hair,

Triumph and courage from defeat,

In marble, white and cold and rare.

No earthly art, no sculptured stone

Could envision these, then portray.

Yet this white marble does atone

And gives a soul to this poor clay.
